Note: Search queries return records on all museums. To search for museums that are currently open use the filter
‘Year exists’, use the drop down menu to select ‘in’, and add the current year to the box marked value.

Village, Town or City: Search for museums within a particular town, city or village. Note that the search will match all names containing the search term e.g. a search for Hull will produce museums in Hull, Kingston-upon Hull and Solihull.
Postcode: Search for museums within a post-code area.
Admin Area: Search for museums by their administrative area: e.g. a country, English region, unitary authority, or county council.
Accreditation: Search for museums that are unaccredited or accredited; that is have been recognised as reaching professional benchmarks. See ‘Glossary’ for more information on accreditation.
Governance: Search for museums according to their organisational structure. See ‘Glossary’ for more information on governance.
Size: Search of museums on the basis of annual visitor numbers. Huge (1million+), Large (100,000 – 1million), Medium (10,000-100,000), Small (0-10,000). See ‘Glossary’ for more information on how size is calculated.
Subject Matter: Search for museums according to their overarching topic. See ‘Glossary’ for more information on subject matter classification.
Visitor Numbers Data: Search for museums according to their numbers of annual visitors. N. B. each record is returned as a separate result i.e. search may return multiple records for individual museums.
Year opened: Search for museums that opened in, after or before a particular year. Date ranges are used when the precise year cannot be established. See ‘Glossary’ for more information on opening dates and ranges.
Year closed: Search for museums that closed in, after or before a particular year. Date ranges are used when the precise year cannot be established. See ‘Glossary’ for more information on closing dates and ranges.
Year exists: Search for all the museums that were open in a particular year. For precise information choose the ‘definitely’ option in the drop down menu. To include museums that have a date range for their years of opening choose the ‘possibly’ option. See ‘Glossary’ for more information on date ranges.

Primary Provenance of Data: Search according to the original source of information on each museum. See ‘Glossary’ for more information.
Deprivation index: Search for museums according to the relative deprivation of their location with 1 being the most deprived and 10 being the least deprived. See ‘Glossary’ for more information on the Deprivation index.
Geodemographic group: Search for the museums in locations that have been categorised according to the characteristics of their population. See ‘Glossary’ for more information on Geo-demographic groups.
Geodemographic subgroup: Search for the museums in locations that have been categorised according to the characteristics of their population. (‘Sub-groups’ are categorised in more detail than ‘groups’). See ‘Glossary’ for more information on Geo-demographic groups.
ACE size designation: Search according to Art Council England categories for museum size. Only museums for which ACE holds records are included in the search.
AIM size designation: Search according to the Association of Independent Museums’ categories for museum size. Only museums for which AIM holds records are included in the search.
DOMUS Subject Matter: Search according to Digest of Museum Statistics categories for museum subject matter. These only relate to entries where the provenance is DOMUS.
